    Hello,

I am planning on visiting the GWSR for the first time on the 29th May for their GWR 175 Event, and I need some help on some good photo spots for me, without the use of a lineside permit. Could anyone please list some good spots with details please?

All help would be very much appreciated

    Cheers,
    Lewis

Why not support the railway by buying a permit? Day permits are available from the station at Toddington.

I doubt I would be able to purchase one though, as I only turn 16 on the 29th May.

Not sure to be honest as I turned 16 a long time ago! Have a look on their website.

I've just had a look and you have to be 18 or over, unfortunately for me! Therefore, does anyone have any info on where I can take some good shots without using a lineside permit?

OK - sorry I can't be of much help regarding spots from the other side of the fence, as I've always had a pass. I've tried some from a distance from the railway, but haven't pursued that as landscape shots which happen to have a train in one corner aren't really my thing.

Hopefully this link to a map will work .... http://www.multimap.com/s/hrSnPk0A

So starting at Toddington station, to the east you will see a dotted green line, this is a footpath.
If you follow this path down to Hailes bridge you will find plenty of good photo spots, including the bridge.
Whilst the purists will say morning shots only I don't think you'll be to disappointed.

Nearer Winchcombe, this map shows the small triangular field at Chicken Curve, access it from the footpath off the B4632 near the rail over bridge.
The rail overbridge the other side of Winchcombe station on the B4078 can also provide good opportunities, but beware of the traffic as it has narrow paths.
The stations will also give some shots.

Thank you for your help BillR

Is the dotted line running parallel with railway also a footpath south from Toddington?

    Cheers, Lewis

Chicken Curve is very much a morning shot and needs the loco to be facing north. GWSR is very good at posting loco rosters and direction locos are facing so enabling advance planning.

Yes, that's the one I'm talking about. Perhaps I could have made it a bit clearer, but yes it's to the east of the line and runs parallel in a southerly direction.
As they will have the field open as a car park you'll be able to access the path from platform 2 at Toddington.

    Hi Lewis Madox,
I too have problems with the GWSR and their 'over 18s only' lineside pass scheme. However having visited some locations I have found several suitable locations. On this webpage: http://rasdv.web.officelive.com/GWSRlinesidephotoguide.aspx you can find them all along with a map to show you where the locations are. Don't worry all the locations are from pubilc vantage points.
    Hope this helps

    Hello,

I would like to know if the aforementioned shot at the small triangular field at Chicken Curve off the B4632 is a public location to film at. I was considering checking the place out, but I wasn't sure whether it was publicly accessible or not. Could someone please confirm?

    Thanks for the information.

One other question: How do you get to the location? I know its off the B4632, but I don't know where the footpath that leads to the place is.

Here is a photo showing the location I'm talking about (The small triangular field at Chicken Curve):

It's reachable by turning left immediately after going under the roadbridge. Keep left and there is a good place to park several cars. Walk along the track a short distance and then into the farmers field and through to the triangle patch. The bad news is that the vegetation is seriously overgrown with several bushes having sprouted up at the lineside
This photo was taken during the recent diesel gala while sheltering under an umbrella in a stiff breeze. Not easy. The grass I had to walk through was so long after the rain that my denims were soaked. I soon dried off though.

I had planned on using Chicken Curve for other shots but after seeing the conditions and, as I still have a lineside pass, I ventured up the Defford straight for my main shots at this location.
