I was thinking are there many locos that are privatley owned that are hidden away from public view, one loco that seems to have disapeared is the Isle of Man loco Thornhill are there others that no one has seen for years.

But the Phyllis Rampton collection IS the strategic steam reserve.
Or shouldn't I have said that?

If you're counting narrow gauge then there are truckloads at private locations.

As far as I know this is at ISLE OF MAN. J Edwards, Ballakillingan House, nr Ramsay. SC 425945. There is also a 3ft gauge coach, ex Manx Northern supposedly there. This account dates from 2006 so things may have changed since?

That 4DD unit deserves a better fate, I know they were not a great success but they were unique for the UK.

No, it's still there and isn't available for public viewing. I know one person who has seen it once since it left Douglas carriage shed in 1978 and he said it looks exactly as it did when it left the railway. There was a picture of it published in the local paper a few years ago ('peeping out' of it's shed!) when a chap from the US visited the Island and wanted to have another pic taken with it again (he's seen it the 1940s/ 50s, contacted the railway and they were able to fix it up). If I get around to it, I'll scan it in.

The same could be said for the Mersey Railway 0-6-4T "Cecil Raikes", which is in a warehouse on Merseyside, although I am pleased it is in safe storage rather than exposed to the salty sea air at Pier Head.
I always thought this would have been a lovely candidate for restoration especially as it is a very powerfull locomotive.

To be fair to the Liverpool Museum they did allow another of their hidden treasures, the Liverpool Tramways "Baby Grand" tramcar #245 to be moved to the Pacific Road collection at Birkenhead.

Yes there is. There is at least one Austerity tank, plus two Merchant Navy class locos. In addition, there are a couple of Finnish 5ft gauge lumps. Sellindge is another site that is private, and must only be visited with permission. We wouldn't want to upset the owner, now would we?

Ok, below is quite a lengthy list of all gauge steam loco's, in location order, I consider difficult to view. Although I know the address for most of them I wouldn't turn up uninvited. A few do have an occasional open day and some others can be visited by prior arrangement. I haven't included Statfold as they do have a few open days a year. The P. Rampton are those hidden in Surrey, not those at the Ffestiniog.

The locos. & the Liverpool Overhead Railway coach belonging to Merseyside museums can be viewed by the the public by making an appointment via the Curator of Land Transport. These being part of a national collection they have to be available for inspection. The warehouse is pretty full at the moment as they have had to empty a neighbouring building while it is re-roofed.
