And one way steam is, I guess, the price you pay for going around the houses to get to Minehead. Six and a half hours to get there would have meant that a steam return would have resulted in a London arrival around midnight or later. Start at Paddington not Victoria. The RTC has the right model.

It says the reason is gauging on the UK Steam website:

THE CATHEDRALS EXPRESS - [IMG] (15/04)-
    London Victoria-Minehead (WCRC) [wcrc]
    61306 46100: Victoria-Bracknell-Newbury-Bishops Lydeard and return
    53808: Bishops Lydeard-Minehead and return
[Return now diesel hauled due to gauging issues]

OK. I wonder if that is the up line on the B&H at one of the stations. I recall that Clan Line and Tornado have been tripped up by that in the past but for them it was just a speed restriction.

So that means that the line (not the loco) has been out of gauge for at least two years, bout time NR fixed it.

45699 hauled one of RTC'S West Somerset Speed Express outward only last year due to a gauging issue. 46115 was ok for Victoria to Staines last year.

But is there a path out of Paddington on a week day ? Also there are people who will only travel if there is a local pick-up who might not have booked if it started at Paddington with a pick-up at Slough or Maidnehead.

I believe it is an overbridge near Bedwyn that is the problems (?) However it is quite feasible that the route has not been gauged for a long time - the longer the time the bigger the clearances required even if nothing has changed !

    Correction: Up platform at Thatcham

Dave, we did both ways over the B&H on December 1st last year with Tornado. Wouldn't have thought 46100 is either taller or wider than 60163.

Could this overbridge issue be related to the fact 46115 has a slightly lower cab roof than 46100? Otherwise, there's no logical reason, gauging wise, why one Royal Scot can make it to the WSR 7 months ago and back and the other can't...

I was told it was platforms at newbury Racecourse but that new electrics can't fit through either so would have to be moved

Tornado was subject to 30 mph slack thro the up platform at Thatcham on last year's Exeter trip.

That's the culprit I think, not Newbury Racecourse.

Loco change outward likely to be Norton Fitzwarren not Bishops Lydeard

Is the diesel on the rear to wsr or light engine?

so royal scot will go back earlier than planned then and the diesel take the passengers back. does the change over happen at NF or Bl, does this mean the 57 is on the back all the time?

There is a rumour that Braunton is on this trip and not the Scot. Can anyone confirm?

UKS still shows the start as being from Victoria - has it now been confirmed as being from Paddington?
