Lostock Hall Motive Power Depot in the 1950’s, a locomotive shed near Preston that served the needs of the North West, providing steam locomotives that served the nation to deliver passengers and goods.

This spring, you would be forgiven for thinking the ELR had become Lostock Hall for a weekend and indeed, you would be right as the curtain raises on Bury’s very own Lostock Hall event. A theatre of steam awaits both young and old as up to 7 engines take to the stage to provide a show that will take many back to their childhood and tell a story to others.

A southern interloper will be attendance throughout the weekend in the form of the mighty ‘City of Wells’ that could have perhaps worked north from London on a Locomotive Club of Great Britain railtour…

Let your imagination run riot, anything could have happened, however one things for sure, Lostock Hall will be remembered for its collection of Black Fives and many other workhorses that will be starring at the Spring Steam Gala…

More information, including locomotive lineup to follow soon... ;)

Interesting to see that 45407 is now regarded as a visitor, but 34092 isn't.

Visiting from the shed at Heywood that its never been to? Must be the shortest travelled visitor in steam loco usage.

Why not drop the Bulleid for this gala and give the visitors more round trips?

Why not just have as many locos as possible? The only real visitors are the 8F and 4MT.

Apart from Ian Riley's pair, how many other ex-Lostock Hall locos are actually in ticket at the moment? Is it just 43106 at the Severn Valley and 44806 at the NYMR?

Because it is daft to light up lots of locos that then sit around and do very little running, particularly if they don't fit in with the theme of the gala.
The main attractions at galas are the visiting locos so it would be good to offer as many opportunities as possible to travel behind and photograph the 8F and 4MT.
There is no need to double head six coach trains on a line like the ELR so six ex mainline locos in steam will be great .

45305 at the GCR. The other ex-Lostock Hall Black Fives, (4)5000 and 45110, aren't going anywhere in a hurry. Likewise Worth Valley-based 78022. I think these are the only surviving Lostock Hall based engines

I presume by "Ian Riley's Pair", you mean the new pair - 45407 and 45212? 44871 was a Carnforth engine

Think you have made a mistake with 90733 - this was restored from a Swedish WD hence was never allocated to 10D in BR days whilst your record of 75058 should read 75078 which was ex SR having worked on Waterloo - Bournemouth - Weymouth services. Check the August 1968 records on your next visit home !

@Fred Kerr , @lil Bear was merely listing those locos in preservation , where other examples of the class were allocated to Lostock hall

Thanks, and yes I meant it as 'the pair of black 5s appearing at the gala courtesy of Ian Riley'.

The BRDatabase suggests 47564 the forgotten Jinty was also at Lostock Hall. Definitely not in ticket. :(

My list was just copied from the former "Lostock Hall Memories" website, as noted in my post.

Though looking back through it, wasn't 75027 a former 10D loco?

And did 10D ever get any Ivatt 2MT and Crabs? Was there any Jinty's & Super D's based there also, or were they all stationed at Preston Shed itself?

    Try this http://www.brdatabase.info/sites.php?page=depots&subpage=locos&id=328

You may find this useful but with reference to http://www.whatreallyhappenedtosteam.co.uk please bear in mind the usual caveats about the source of data.

I've just checked the BR Database website and it confirmed what I thought to be the case - It did spend its final years in the North West after moving up from the Cambrian area, but although rather a wanderer it was never based at Lostock Hall. It was shedded at various times at Bank Hall, Aintree, Tebay and Skipton before its final stint at Carnforth from where it was withdrawn.
