Hong Kong is currently building a luxury cruise ship terminal out of the old HKG airport runway.
theres not a lot of spare land (when you consider it's a strip of in filled land in the middle of the bay, some distance from many city facilities and the opposite side of where the action is...
So here could be a good possibility for a hotel where space is at a premium and definitely not cheap.

Kind of obvious really that it wouldnt go for scrap.. interesting plan.. sounds like it will still be a runner, just not a cruise ship, but a mobile floating hotel..
I Remember the Varyag being sold (and the Americans trying to stop it).. that was never going to be a runner and sit in one place forever as a hotel / casino too..
I'll give it 10 years before it sails in Chinese waters away from western reach of litigation.

Next on the Chinese shopping list.. An example of Concorde ?

I'm glad we were able to travel on the last but one Atlantic trip. She was a lot shinier then!

Finally...some good news? Email from the QE2 Story website...

Breaking news - QE2 Dry Docking 2018 - ship to open within weeks.

After 10 years of waiting, QE2's time has finally come, our wait is very nearly over. She was moved to dry-dock on the 18th of March (her third while in Dubai), and a high level of activity was then observed to be taking place, as hundreds of workers descended on her around the clock. Her hull was stripped back to the metal - we think for only the 3rd time ever - and fully repainted with gleaming paint. All her underwater openings were welded shut, including her bow thrusters and stabilisers, and her propellers were removed. Where her lifeboat winches were previously, the boat deck has now been widened, and on her stern, SOUTHAMPTON has disappeared, to be replaced with large DUBAI Mina Rashid logos. They are advertising her as follows "Discover a world of gastronomy, entertainment and nightlife experiences onboard the QE2. From casual and fine dining, to grand theaters and nightclubs – she will have a selection of 12 diverse venues to uncover at her prime location in Dubai’s Mina Rashid...".

Interesting, thanks for posting that. Her life in the sunshine appears to be evolving well! Looking forward to five nights (in April) on the other basking Cunarder in Long Beach :)

This will be my 4th trip, but the first without all the usual other Sou Cal attractions. Flying into Long Beach...taxi to the ship and just soak her up for 5 days...no other plans. The 5D will be on overtime Alan!
