I'd settle for Bulleid-Jarvis pacifics if they are indeed '90 per cent Bulleid'. How about calling it an 'MNX'?

Different tenders and the pony truck wasn't as far back on a BB/WC as it was on an MN owing to the former's smaller grate. Different cylinder dimensions too.

Latest Steam Railway mag has hit the mat this morning. Includes some comments from Pat Marshall at Carnforth confirming that 35018 has been steamed. On 19th Dec, she told Tony Streeter: "We've had it in steam but it's a long way from being ready." When pushed for a date, she joked that it might be ready by April 1st!

I remember seeing 35018 in the shed at Ropley MHR around 1980 and to my eyes it looked almost finished then. Clearly my knowledge was severely lacking but it certainly was in a rather better state than "Barry condition." I can only assume that work on the loco was halted soon after I saw it and that it remained neglected for years, deteriorating in the process.

I believe, from what I read a while ago now, that there was a plan to bring some Duchesses to the Southern in the 1960s (and presumably to transfer a corresponding number of MNs to the LM). But apparently clearance problems, particularly around Southampton Tunnel, scuppered things so it never happened. Happy to be corrected if I'm wrong!

i think you are referring to the period when axle problems caused temporary MN withdrawal and other locos were drafted in

I would imagine 46115s ticket is ending very soon , so would 35018 temporarily take Guardsman's place on the main line whilst the Scot's overhaul is being done? Then once 46115 is back, 35018 can go farther afield. Just my idle thoughts, I must stress.......

Be interesting to know when she pops her head out of Carnforth...... as I presume the owners want her earning her keep...

I'm sure we've already done that! Although as we know, one livery debate is never enough!

Sounds very ominous! Presumably you've seen it outside Carnforth in BR Black then? ;)

Well when the Railway magazines all rumoured that Ian Riley was buying 35018, the supposed livery when complete was to be BR Lined Black. Maybe David Smith liked the idea when he bought it instead ;)

Would be interesting to see how that would look. Or maybe a return of BR Express Blue that graced 35005.
