506 is being put back together by the Urie society with help from the MHR so should be the next loco back in service.

    I think you mean 75079 btw ;):)

Driving wheels on 75079 have yet to come out, so axle box overhaul and possibly re-tyre or turning will be required. Also the drag box has to be completely remade along with a new cab and then there is no small matter of assembling the tender.

I think it is a fair bet that 34105 will be in traffic before 75079.

From what I understand the boiler is still to be removed and to be overhaul. The wheels need to come out and retyred. Plus the frames need to be overhauled. Having worked on this loco there is still lot of work to be done. The group working on this loco are doing a first class overhaul on this loco.

Only had time to edit two shots from yesterday. 76017 and 45379 sharing the duties... the best shots were of 45379 - once climbing the Alps near Soke Hill and arriving into Ropley as the sun begins to set.

    Very nice!
I visited on Boxing day with my Dad. We ended up doing two round trips behind the Black Five in the afternoon as the crew were really giving the passengers a spirited run. I don't know what the occasion was but the crew were certainly using the whistle more than usual. On the last trip out of Alton 45379 was opened up in some style after a gentle start from the station with loads of whistling. Only a few passengers experienced this superb run with six carriages as most of them had left the train at Alton.

I had a similar experience on Tues 27th. The spirited running was a joy to behold on the 6 coach trains. Glad I stuck on the last run out of Alton before doubling back at M&4M to get an SWT home. The Black 5 really does sound in fine form at the moment.

I also paid a brief visit on Thursday which was also blessed with excellent sunny conditions. One thing I appreciate with the MHR is the high standard of restoration which means that when the on-line loco roster said 45379 and 76017 were sharing the duties throughout December, I could be confident that these would indeed be the engines working. Thanks to everyone concerned and for me, a good note on which to end 2016 as far as trains are concerned.

Latest Steam Railway mag arrived today. It reports that MHR and NRM have agreed a new overhaul for 850 Lord Nelson, and she has taken the place of 76017 in the shed. The repairs to 925 will take priority (a BR-era weld to a frame crack has failed, apparently). S15 506 is also ahead of Nellie in the queue, it seems.

I got to admit I wondered the same, have had to step back from volunteering on the railway this year due to a new job so I have missed out on all the news.

The last update on the GM situation was in the latest MHNews.

They advertised and offered the job, only for the successful applicant to have a change of heart after accepting the post, as his business took priority.

You have to wonder why you would apply for the job in the first place if you could not devote the time and energy to fulfil the position once offered!

I don't know what`s happened since that point however.
