The gate on the A6 side of the crossing at Bridge 36 appears to be missing

Thanks woodster, maybe related to the cycleway contractors,Il pass it on

Today was a split day, firstly finish off primer on the south crossing gate at Darley then start on the north side, which required considerably less grinding down thankfully, then the sun came out so the rust convertor was applied followed by primer ,the other road facing side will be done in a weeks time on a non running day for the benefit of safety what with grinding on a.public road facing side, the box side gate is now ready though to be repainted in white.

The rest of the day was set aside to help ben and the gang concreting the new base to sit the platform coping stones upon at the Rowsley ramp end of the down platform, this work is part of a bigger plan,as the damaged edging stones have been sent away to be redressed and cut and will be replaced in a weeks time, along with some further up the platform which are being replaced, this is all being done as the platform is due to be tarmacked early November as far as the station building as there's no point tarmaccing further with the footbridge works digging it up again, amongst other plans are new running in boards on both platforms and topping of the lamps on the down side which are in production so the next couple months should be a change at Darley dale. An early start this morning ,the Darley station side crossing gate needing to be ground down and then painted with rust convertor and then primer again, while that was drying I moved onto the cabin side gate and put two coats of white gloss back on before getting to put two coats of gloss on the rear of the already painted last week station side gate, I had to leave he horizontals though as some of the primer that had ran from the front through was still tacky.

Next time it'l be finish glossing the front and horizontals off then move onto the two main gate posts and the underside of the two gates where it meets the floor left to last

As an aside the contractors have started to clear the old surface off the top of the down platform ready for some hardcore, packing with the roller then tarmaccing.

Up at Rowsley Keirons on with the tank off the tank waggon now, about a third to a half has been repainted in the last week, Ben and the gang continue with platform coping work at Darley.

I am very curious about the diagonal bracing on the gate - I always understood such bracing should be running from the top bar distant from the hinge to lower bar nearer the hinge, so that the struts were in compression towards the hinge end, this being the better placement to minimise sagging. A quick look at "Midland Style" by the Historical Railway Society shows no mention of level crossing gate construction, alas!

I think you are right, this also applies to wooden doors with the 'Z' bracing.

My guess is that it's a steel gate and the opposite applies, if that is the case. Timber in compression, steel in tension.

That makes sense - and kestreleyes does refer to 'rust converter' - I perhaps had mistakenly assumed he was talking about the metal fittings on the gate rather than the structure of the gate itself.

Sorry, been on nights this week hence late reply to your question, yes they are all steel fabrication, they were I'm told made at the workshops of Tunstead quarry near Buxton, partly due to one of our early volunteers being a neighbour of the then manager at the quarry, Mick Thomas did a lot of work on them being installed as he was our head engineer at the time, if you look at the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway just over the hill they have Gorsey Bank gates in the same style but they have mesh which stands off rather than ours which is welded on,Mick being the project engineer on that job too.

They get usually repainted at least once yearly,I plan all signals and gates as such and th cabins get done about every other year, but we keep on top of that, can't be having water rotting signalling in any form.

That is correct, I remember being accused of putting them on the wrong way when I made them but this was the way they were designed,

The loco is not based at Peak Rail and hasn't been for a number of years. Probably returning to the Great Central after the Blubell's Giants Of Steam.

Agreed, it's a great pity the 48624 shareholders who were overwhelmingly Peak Rail folk weren't consulted at the time.

As a small compensation I took the photo below at the south end of Rowsley MPD (by then 16J) in October 1963, little realising that the shed would close eight months later.
48001 was one of the first ten fitted with domeless boilers.

yesterday it was a nice sunny day and the final coats of paint on the gates were done plus some loc cupboards and some maintenance, today apart from the morning rain with Ben,Dave, scott,Andrew,Roger and myself fitted the new and replaced coping stones onto the down platform north end ramp leaving only the flat base to finish next time

At Rowsley the deisel crane was being worked on and I'm told has passed its exams and Keiron and Ian were busy stripping 5553 in the shed ready for restoration, the exhibition coach continues with door and window section works and the other dmu was being worked on.

Quick message for Dave I'd be interested in a copy of his photo of 48001 for the Peak Rail archives and other photos he has of the route. You can contact me via the address in the Peak Rail magazine if you are a member otherwise via our shop in Matlock to discuss this further. I saw 48000 on a freight coming through Coalville in the 1960s but I don't think I ever saw 48001. Many thanks Mick Bond Archivist Peak Rail

A locomotive called Ring Haw has arrived from the North Norfolk Railway and will be running on the Santa Specials, more details on the Peak Rail page on Facebook.
